Samoa, a Pacific island state famous for its colorful customs, is back on the world map as the organizer of the 23rd International Siva Afi Competition, a very exciting affair that presents the fire knife dance. This stunning cultural display is one of the main contributors to the globalization of Samoa’s tourism, as it combines the island’s history with the contemporary performances which have gained international acclaim.

The competition, unique to Samoa, not only celebrates the artistry of fire knife dancing but also provides a platform for Samoa to introduce its culture and heritage to a global audience. This is particularly significant in light of the growing demand for unique cultural experiences in tourism. The annual event is a significant attraction during Samoa’s Teuila Festival and is recognised as the second-longest International Fire Knife Dance competition worldwide.

Hon. Fata Ryan Schuster, Samoa’s Minister of Tourism, praised the event for its role in preserving and promoting Samoan culture. He highlighted that fire knife dancing is more than a performance; it’s a vital connection to Samoa’s identity. For generations, this tradition has helped Samoan families and performers secure opportunities to perform on international stages, showcasing their talents in places like Hawaii, the United States, and Hong Kong.

Minister Schuster emphasised that the competition is not only a cultural celebration but also a significant contributor to the tourism sector, which continues to grow as a top revenue earner for Samoa. Between July 2024 and June 2025, tourism generated nearly 650 million USD tala, a figure that speaks to the impact of tourism-driven events like Siva Afi.

The ongoing success of the International Siva Afi Competition underscores its importance as a tourism asset. With tourism revenues playing a critical role in the national economy, events like Siva Afi contribute significantly to the visibility of Samoa on the world stage. Tourists are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer authentic cultural experiences, and Siva Afi provides just that, an opportunity to witness one of the Pacific’s most iconic traditions in action.

Moreover, the competition highlights Samoa’s commitment to nurturing its young talent, with many participants going on to perform worldwide. One standout fire knife dancer from Samoa recently ranked in the top six at the prestigious World Fire Knife Championships, further cementing Samoa’s reputation as a leader in this unique performing art.

Samoa’s tourism appeal extends far beyond the competition stage. The island is home to numerous attractions that draw visitors year-round. Among the must-see destinations are:

These attractions, paired with world-class hospitality, make Samoa a prime destination for those seeking an authentic cultural experience in the heart of the Pacific.

Looking ahead, Samoa is positioned to further expand its tourism and hospitality sector. The government, through the Samoa Tourism Authority (STA), has made substantial investments in promoting local businesses and attractions. With the success of events like the Siva Afi Competition, there is a clear opportunity to build on this momentum by creating more opportunities for local entrepreneurs and performers.

In terms of hospitality, expanding infrastructure such as more accommodation options, upscale resorts, and tourism-related services is essential. Additionally, Samoa could benefit from improving its digital presence, ensuring that potential visitors can easily access information about the island’s rich culture, events, and destinations. Enhanced marketing strategies, focusing on both traditional media and digital platforms, can help bring Samoa to the attention of a broader international audience.

The 23rd International Siva Afi Competition not only celebrates Samoa’s rich cultural heritage but also plays a key role in driving tourism and boosting the local economy. As Minister Schuster aptly put it, events like these are crucial for showcasing Samoa to the world, preserving its unique cultural identity, and creating long-term opportunities for local talent and businesses.

Samoa is ready to enhance its already successful tourism with competition advantages, giving the visitors a mixture of cultural shows, beautiful nature, and friendly people. The promising future of the tourism industry in Samoa, which is backed by solid ground, will certainly be supported by events like the Siva Afi Competition that will be a major part of its success in the future.
